and back to the capitals…

in my playoff excitement, i’ve not been blogging much about the capitals or their draft day party or their upcoming switch to brand spankin’ new uniforms, but i did oh so very much enjoy this photo.ovechkin!
now, i know that this photo has been making the rounds on caps sites, but wouldn’t it be completely, 100 percent awesome if the capitals and their new uniforms looked like this? i’m not usually a fan of red, white, and blue uniforms – i much prefer the ever-classic little black jersey – but if this is what the team looked like, i could totally get behind the new colors.

and in terms of the other changes rumored, on frozen bloghas some news about ice girls possibly coming to the verizon center. there have been some rather nice comments on this from other women within the caps blogger community, which i won’t replicate. but i want to point out that one of the things i enjoy most about being a caps fan is the committment to the overall dc community. by supporting youth hockey programs, this team is helping to ensure that both boys and girls – and their parents and families – become lifelong hockey fans. as part of this committment, the caps have their ice kids program, where young players essentially perform the same duties of the islanders’ ice girls. think about what a huge thrill it must be for these kids to be on a nhl rink. a scantily clad ice girl may result in more audience reaction than an ice kid, but in the long run, the payoff – in terms of long term hockey love – is less apparent.

would it be great to have more enthusiasm at caps games? yes – but replacing ice kids is not the solution to the overall lack of cheering power.
